I do the work that I do to express myself in ways that words can't. There are no judgments in the art world as everyone is free to create whatever feels right to them. I feel like the pieces I make each represent a small part of me deep down inside that I never knew I had. Everyone glaze choice, every form choice has a purpose. In the future, I hope to continue discovering unknown parts of my personality, my being.
As I start every project, I take into consideration the theme I want to work with. A major, broad theme that can help me start thinking of forms and details. I usually come up with some easier sketches and some harder sketches that are more difficult to make. Having variety in my ideas helps me to figure out all of my choices. That way I can combine some parts together and make different variations of the same three ideas. I select techniques that I know will get me the job done quickest. I have never been on the wheel and have created all of my pieces by hand. I believe this method works best for me as I can branch out from the uniform looks that come from the wheel. I choose my materials and glazes/stains by figuring out which makes the most sense with my theme.
My current work are some of the more challenging pieces I've ever had to make. This year, I decided to challenge myself by creating pieces that I knew needed some thinking before attempting. Difficult forms and intricate glazing were some of the factors I decided to include. Figuring out how to go about creating something I think is much more fun than coming up with something that can be easily done. Where's the fun in having a week of extra time rather than working until that last period where it's due? I took more time with my work and I found myself much more pleased with the outcome.
